H5 VCR Report for 2023

A total of 7262 unique records were collected and entered into the BSBI Database for East Cork (H5) in 2023.

In June we co-hosted a BSBI Tree Identification Day in Glenbower Woods, Killeagh with the Irish Officer Paul Green.  15 botanists spent most of the day learning about tree identification in this diverse woodland which contains both deciduous and coniferous species.

There were 122 new hectad records in H5 for 2023 which included 11 new vice-county records.

Three native species were added to the H5 flora this year; Welted Thistle (Carduus crispus), Hybrid Yellow-cress (Rorippa amphibia × sylvestris = R. × anceps) and Des Etangs' St John's-wort (Hypericum maculatum × perforatum = H. × desetangsii).

Non-native additions to the H5 flora included Pleated Snowdrops (Galanthus plicatus), Western Balsam-poplar (Populus trichocarpa), Common Michaelmas-daisy (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii × lanceolatum = S. × salignum) and Pick-a-back-plant (Tolmiea menziesii).
