Hawkweeds of South-East England

Read an exclusive interview about the new Handbook with author Mike Shaw on the BSBI News & Views blog.

The latest in the series of BSBI Handbooks was published in April 2020. Hawkweeds of South-East England, BSBI Handbook #20, aims to help botanists get to grips with this challenging genus.

Hawkweeds (Hieracium spp.) are considered one of the trickiest groups of plants in Britain and Ireland but with this new BSBI Handbook, author Mike Shaw -  Sussex-based hawkweed enthusiast, a BSBI member since 1988 and former BSBI County Recorder for West Sussex - hopes to bring identification of this beautiful but difficult genus within reach for any botanist encountering hawkweeds in Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, the Isle of Wight or Kent.

In Hawkweeds of south-east England, Mike focuses on 58 species of hawkweed recorded in south-east England. He gives historical information, details of sites where you can see each of the species, notes on habitats and flowering times, a key to the eight hawkweed sections found in south-east England and identification tips to help you ID your hawkweed to species.

Hawkweeds of south-east England is available as an eBook via the BSBI website for £10.00 or from Summerfield Books and other natural history booksellers (RRP £35.00 (plus postage & packing)).
