2023 County Report for Monmouthshire

Stephanie J.Tyler and Elsa Wood

We have added over 5,000 records to Mapmate in 2023 and these have been sent to the BSBI Big Database and to the local records centre.

We undertook fieldwork in poorly covered tetrads and also carried out two surveys for local authorities in connection with proposed developments. We have also advised local authorities on management of land.

We continue to work closely with the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre SEWBReC and SJT attended two Bioblitzes organized by SEWBReC – at Rogiet Countryside Park and at Manor Wood at The Narth. We organized and led six meetings of the Monmouthshire Botany Group. We also have worked closely with Monmouthshire Meadows Group in surveying land of new members and advising on management.

We have completed a total revamp of the last Rare Plant Register, for Monmouthshire vc35 and that, well illustrated with photographs, is now online on the BSBI website. We are now undertaking an update of Trevor Evans’ Flora of Monmouthshire, showing changes over the last 20+ years. We hope to have completed this in late 2024/early 2025.
