Whitebeams, Rowans and Service Trees of Britain and Ireland contains an account of all the native and naturalized Sorbus taxa occurring in Britain and Ireland, now numbering 44 species and eight hybrids. Of these 52 taxa, 43 are native and an astonishing 35 are endemic to Britain. Two are Irish endemics.

The monograph is based on morphological and molecular taxonomic studies coupled with extensive field work, during which 22 new trees have been described. It was the result of over ten years collaborative work between the National Museum Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Universities of Bristol, Exeter and Oxford.
