Botanical surveyors sought
UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is looking for botanical surveyors for a Defra / Natural England survey in 2023.
This is likely to be a rolling national survey, with potential for survey work in future years.

Defra/NE England Ecosystem Survey 2023
A new, pilot vegetation survey of 400 1x1km squares (monads) across England in 2023.
The aim is to provide openly available, high quality data on natural capital across England (vegetation, soils, water, landscapes)
The target is to record 500 monads every year for the next 5 years.
UKCEH is looking for botanical surveyors for the following key tasks:
- Recording plant species diversity and abundance in quadrats and linear plots (hedgerows, field margins, riparian strips)
- Recording ponds and veteran trees
- Mapping habitats and their condition
- Undertaking a simple landscape assessment
Recording in the field will be on ruggedized tablet
Attendance at a one week fully paid training course in March will be required
Each monad is likely to take 4-6 days to survey.
The 2023 survey runs 1 May – 31st October.
Surveyors do not need to be available for the full season, but would need to commit to a minimum of 15 days survey work (excluding the training week).
We will endeavour to allocate monads in the regions where surveyors are based, some overnight stays may be needed.
